What the lawsuits are about

Plaintiffs allege that major baby food manufacturers and retailers sold infant and toddler food, including purees, rice cereal, and snack puffs, that contained measurable levels of inorganic arsenic, lead, cadmium, and mercury, and that the companies knew about elevated heavy-metal levels in ingredients or finished products through their own internal testing. The complaints assert that repeated consumption of these products during infancy and early childhood contributed to neurodevelopmental injuries, principally autism spectrum disorder and ADHD, though the master complaint's causation theory has not been accepted by the court as scientifically established for any child's individual case.

Baby food toxic-metals lawsuits were first filed starting around 2021, following a February 2021 congressional staff report on heavy metals in baby food (see below). The Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation centralized the growing number of related federal cases on April 11, 2024, creating MDL No. 3101, IN RE: Baby Food Products Liability Litigation, in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, assigned to Judge Jacqueline Scott Corley. The first constituent action was filed with the panel on January 4, 2024.

The MDL has grown substantially since 2024; litigation trackers reported roughly 100 pending cases in mid-2024 and over 400 by mid-2025.
